In one of these visits to California in July 1979, George Schultz me a while to the traditional annual summer camp to be a guest at the Bohemian Grove be - Powers (1987), p. 269th This weekend brought me one of the most amazing experiences I've ever made in the USA. Later I am still a twice been to the Bohemian Grove and my impressions have been taken further.
The landscape in which this is happening "encampment" is of unusual beauty. It is a few hundred meters wide and several kilometers long valley, on both the slopes and the bottom of venerable, sometimes thousands of years is covered sequoias. Between the loosely clustered treetops while the sky you can not make up the horizons. There is great peace disturbed by any car, only penetrates from time to time from somewhere music. Some paths run through the valley, as a stream of water derived from a small lake in the Russian River at the foot of the valley (the river's name recalls the time when Alaska belonged to Russia and Russian hunters and settlers to the south almost to Thrust into the middle of California's). From previous visits to California, I knew the Sequoia stocks of Muir Woods north of the Golden Gate Bridge, they had always fascinated me. The Bohemian Grove is on the other hand, a small district, but only the beauty of nature is worth the long drive.
interesting is the meeting of the men (women are not allowed) in the Bohemian Grove, it got its name by the way of the exclusive Bohemian Club in San Francisco, whose membership is can acquire only after a long wait. One lives in the Grove is not common in a large warehouse, and the two thousand men who lived there spent together that weekend, but in five or six dozen smaller, largely of trees and Bushes concealed camps, scattered on the slopes. Some camps consist of block houses, others wooden huts, others were camping and there are electric lights and running water. The meals are simple and hearty, but well cooked. Almost all wear colorful, sometimes outrageous plaid shirts and trousers - so as to attract Americans when they go to the green nature. The residents of the Camps visit each other, either because of the musical performances (some very good play Dixieland, other classical quartet), whether for reasons of companionship or for a chat. Everywhere there is an informal and cheerful atmosphere.
In July 1979 there were two or three joint events on the lake shore and in small open-air theaters, which are hineingebettet in the wooded hillside. On the banks of the lake "Lake Side speech" takes place, a speech usually political or economic content, given by one of the prominent members or one of the guests (including me once allocation that honor), imported from another camp participant. The audience sit on the grass, with a view of the water, many of them in the relevant field, well informed and not critical. But the whole event takes place informally, with a touch of romance and boys with the flair of a western on television.
Some camps hold short presentations followed by discussion. I remember one afternoon in a neighboring camp, where three of the former "presidential hopefuls" were present, namely George Bush, Alexander Haig and Ronald Reagan. I do not remember if it their intention to be set up as a presidential candidate, had already announced at that time, in the foreign policy debate, acted by the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, by Henry Kissinger and me was taken In any case, they carefully restrained.
This weekend allowed an illustrative insight into the West Coast elite. The politicians present were mostly guests of the club members, but they were artists (I got there, Isaac Stern know), writers (such as Herman Wouk), doctors, lawyers, bankers like Peter Peterson and industrialists such as David Packard, whom I first ten years know him as Deputy Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird had to and was co-owner of the world by Hewlett-Packard now, or two Stephen Bechtel, Senior and Junior, who ran with my host George Schultz another international firm in San Francisco. Certainly some of the participants came from the East, the Midwest and South, but overall I could not imagine a greater contrast to the somewhat cool and stylish atmosphere in the New England Council on Foreign Relations or the River Club of New York. Here in the Grove was one rather short sleeves, cleaned up directly, carefree - but not for all that superficial. This was undoubtedly establishment, but from a very different kind of temperament. The difference was much larger than that between Bavaria and the northern German port cities.
